Lockdales is delighted to announce that our upcoming Fine Sale auction on the 28th and 29th April will feature an exceptional selection of contemporary Indian miniature paintings by notable 20th‑century artists, including Naina Kumari and Ramesh Sharma. This impressive group comes from a distinguished private London collection, with the majority of the works having previously been exhibited at the Commonwealth Institute in Kensington.

A Living Tradition Renewed

Indian miniature painting is an art form with deep and luxurious roots. It first flourished during the 16th and 17th centuries under the Mughal emperors, where imperial workshops fostered extraordinary levels of craftsmanship and artistic refinement. Each ruler’s patronage encouraged subtle stylistic developments, resulting in a rich variety of schools and visual languages across the subcontinent. Precision of line, delicacy of colour, and attention to narrative detail became defining characteristics of the genre.

The 20th‑century artists represented in

this auction looked back to these historic traditions while confidently reinterpreting them for a modern audience. Artists such as Naina Kumari and Ramesh Sharma embraced the miniature format not as a relic of the past, but as a living artistic language, capable of fresh expression while maintaining technical discipline and reverence for historical models.

Courtly Life in Exquisite Detail

The paintings offered at Lockdales invite the viewer into a miniature yet luxurious world—one of royal courts, ceremonial rituals, music, romance, and quiet moments of reflection. Every composition is carefully balanced, with refined brushwork revealing layers of detail that reward close, unhurried viewing. Subtle, jewel‑like colours and gold highlights echo the splendour of earlier Mughal and Rajput works, while contemporary sensibilities bring renewed energy and individuality.

Figures appear poised and expressive, architectural settings are meticulously rendered, and landscapes unfold in carefully modulated tones. Together, these works capture the poetry of courtly life, distilling grand narratives into intimate, jewel‑scaled masterpieces.

From Private Collection
to the Auction Room

Having resided in a private London collection for many years, and with exhibition history at one of Britain’s most significant cultural institutions dedicated to global art and design, this group represents a rare opportunity for collectors. Such provenance underscores the artistic and cultural importance of the works, while their condition and quality speak to the care with which they have been preserved.

Collecting Contemporary Miniatures

Interest in contemporary Indian miniature painting continues to grow, as collectors and scholars alike recognise the skill required to maintain this demanding tradition in the modern era. These paintings bridge centuries of artistic knowledge, offering both historical resonance and contemporary relevance.

Lockdales’ forthcoming sale provides an exciting chance to acquire works that celebrate one of the world’s most refined pictorial traditions—beautifully crafted, deeply rooted in history, and alive with narrative and colour.

Discover a world where history, craftsmanship, and miniature perfection meet—available to view from Wednesday 22nd April and under the hammer on day two of Lockdales’ upcoming Fine Sale auction on Wednesday 29th April.
