Gary’s interest in stamps started when he joined his school stamp club when he was 14 years old. He was soon put in charge of sorting the Blue Peter stamps in the school basement. His collecting grew from then and by his early 20s he was dealing on a small scale and then continued dealing in stamps at fairs until he was in his 40s. Whilst continuing to collect and deal he was busy running two shops and post offices for over 25 years.

Howard Williamson
Weapons, Medals & Militaria Consultant

Howard Williamson’s passion for collecting militaria began as a 7-year-old visiting local auctions with his father in Merstham, Surrey. An avid reader as a teenager his fascination with military items continued to grow and he was soon giving local antique dealers appraisals of items in upcoming auctions.

Since then, Howard has become a recognised authority on all things military related, with an encyclopaedic knowledge that he regularly brings to bear at Lockdales. Author of some 15 books on militaria, he is perhaps best known for his unrivalled reference book, The Great War Medal Collectors’ Companion, boasting 600 pages and countless colour illustrations, which took over eight years to research and write.

He has also spent over the last 22 years hard at work compiling the Military Medal roll-call. “On the 9th September 1940, the Germans dropped a bomb on the Arnside Street Army Record Centre in London and burnt all the citations for the MM. I’ve spent over 22 years with my co-author, Chris Bate, recovering citations from all over the place. We’ve probably recovered about 50,000 of the 121,000 that were lost.” His work on First World War research has been recognised by The Orders & Medals Research Society who awarded him at silver medal for merit.
